Growing up in D.C. one of my favorite places to go was Gravelly Point near National Airport to watch planes land and take off. Naturally once I moved to L.A. I wanted to see if there was a place near LAX where I could do a little plane watching as well.
After a little research I found out about Westchester Park across from In-n-Out. It's a really small grassy area with some trees for shade and awesome views for plane spotting. The LAX landing strip is directly across the street which means international jumbo jets and triple 7s come in loud and low.
If you love plane watching at an extremely close distance or just want to see something different check it out and see for yourself how cool it is to watch planes land.
As always you can get there without a car just give yourself a little time, patience, and a loaded metro card. I went on a Saturday and caught the Culver City train to Vermont & Expo then took the 102 (LAX City Bus) and from there I can't lie the ride was really long. I got off at Sepulveda & La Tijera and walked about 2 blocks to the park. Coming back the bus stop is located at Sepulveda & Westchester. The 102 runs kinda slow so download the metro.net app or check the website for a schedule and bring a jacket because it gets cool out there and the air conditioning on the bus was running at full blast. I also noticed the Big Blue #3 and Culver City #6 lines run along Sepulveda also if you need a different way of getting there. As always travel more, explore more, photograph more. -N.
